The Sinharaja Rainforest is a biodiverse ecosystem that is home to a variety of plant and animal species. The forest is dominated by Lower Montane Wet Evergreen Forests, which are typical of mid-elevation primary rainforests. The forest canopy is made up of different layers, each with unique environmental conditions and organisms. The emergent layer is home to tall trees such as Shorea congestiflora, while the primary canopy layer is composed of species such as Shorea distichta and Shorea megistophylla. The sub-canopy layer is home to a large concentration of insects, and the ground layer is composed of rare and endemic herbal plants.
The Sinharaja Forest Reserve is home to a variety of flora and fauna that are endemic to Sri Lanka, as well as some that are endemic to the forest itself. The forest's high biodiversity includes globally threatened species such as the Sri Lanka Blue Magpie, Loris Massmulla, Giant Squirrel, Toque Monkey, Fishing Cat, and Asian Elephant. The forest is also a living repository of a pristine ecosystem, with many rare and globally threatened species of fauna and flora.
The vegetation of Sinharaja is characterized as a tropical lowland rainforest or tropical wet evergreen forest, with striking characteristics such as the loftiness of the dominant trees, the straightness of their bole, the abundance of regeneration, and the diversity of species. The vegetation of Sinharaja is humid wet evergreen forest type with a high degree of endemism. The forest is home to many woody trees and lianas, with 66% of them being endemic. Additionally, high levels of endemism are found among lower plants like ferns and epiphytes.
