So wrote Mark Twain, inspired by a drive from Colombo to the Galle Face Green, during which he became enamoured of Ceylon’s vivid character. Many travellers have been enthralled by this emerald teardrop, our island home.

Another, Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle, creator of Sherlock Holmes, penned “I write these lines with a pad upon my knee, heaving upon the long roll of the Indian Ocean running large and grey under a grey streaked sky with the rain-swept hills of Ceylon just one shade greyer, lining the Eastern skyline”.

The Galle Face Hotel, as it has for the past 153 years, offers explorers and travellers rest and respite in the spirit of the greatest colonial explorers.
