Kumana national park is also called Yala East. It is a lot smaller than Yala and much less crowded National Park which is located in the southeast corner of Sri Lanka. Kumana (Yala East) National Park is a well-known eco-friendly tourist attraction and bird sanctuary where a multitude of birds breed and roost.
The dry season is generally peak season, however, in comparison to the park’s to the west, Kumana sees just a fraction of the number of visitors and you can really enjoy a peaceful trip even in the busiest of months. For bird watchers, Kumana is one of the best parks in the country to visit and to experience the mass migrations you are the best traveling here between April and July.
One of the most significant features of the park is the lagoons and tanks, fed by the Kumbukkan Oya through a narrow channel. It is at this mangrove marsh that many water birds nests are found during the months of May and June. Typical sightings include such species of bird as pelicans, painted storks, spoonbills, white ibis, herons, egrets and little cormorants. The very rare black-necked stork has also been spotted at the swamp. In addition to the abundant bird life, Kumana is also home to some of the mammals found in the larger Yala National Park, such as elephants and leopards, sloth bear etc.
