Madru Oya National Park

Maduru Oya National Park established under the Mahaweli development project and also acts as a catchment of the Maduru Oya Reservoir. The park was designated on 9 November 1983. Providing a sanctuary to wildlife, especially for elephants and protecting the immediate catchments of five reservoirs are the importance of the park. A community of the indigenous (Veddah) ethnic group of Sri Lanka lives within the park boundary in Henanigala. 

Maduru Oya National Park is one of popular wild life destination for spotting elephants. And Maduru Oya National Park spreads over an area of 58, 849 hectares for a wide variety of wildlife including some endemic bird species and reptiles. Elephant, Sambhur, Spotted, Barking Deer, Wild Boar, Wild Buffalo, Torque Macaque, Purple Face Leaf Monkey and Nocturnal Slender Loris are the main wildlife that travelers can be spotted. Rarely Leopard and Sloth Bear can be spotted. Additionally, there are about many bird species including Lesser Adjutant, Wooly Necked Stork, Open Bill, Painted Stork, Racket Tailed Drongo, Yellow Fronted Barbet, Sri Lanka Jungle Fowl and Spur Fowl can be witnessed in this Maduru Oya National Park. Apart from wildlife, Maduru Oya National Park also consist many ancient ruins to see. 


 Madru Oya Afternoon safari

You start your safari by 3 PM with an exciting open vehicle game drive and it will last until 6 PM.

Maduru Oya Afternoon Safari is well-known for its boundless opportunities to spot the Elephants, famous Sri Lankan Birds, Migrate birds and many more wild lives.

Afternoon safaris are conducted in open 4 x 4 safari vehicles.
