Minneriya National Park was declared as a wild life sanctuary in 1938 and was declared as a national park in 1997. It is 88.9 sq km. This was mainly declared as a protected area to protect the ancient the Minneriya Tank which was built by king Mahasen and the wild lives in surrounding area. Minneriya Nationl park is well known for its large number of elephant gathering specially in dry season between May to October since large heards of elephants in Kawdulla, Eco Park and nearby areas are attracted green grass fields of Minneriya tank. It is reported that 150- 200 elephants can be seen and some times numbers are as high as 700.
In addition to Asian elephants, this is home for monkeys, Sri Lanka sambar deer, Sri Lankan sloth bear, grey slender loris, wild buffalo, wild pig and 170 of bird species.
Evening Safari Game Drive in Minneriya National Park
Minneriya National Park is well-known for its boundless opportunities to spot the famous Sri Lankan Elephant and many more wild lives specially during the evening time.
You will start your safari by 3 PM with an exciting open vehicle game drive and it will last until 6PM. Evening safaris are conducted in open 4 x 4 safari vehicles.
