Wilpattu National Park

Wilpattu National Park is considered as one of the oldest wild life sanctuaries in Sri Lanka which was declared as a national park in the year 1938. The park is the largest national park in Sri Lanka. The unique feature of the park is existence of “willus”, they are shallow nature lakes which are filled with rain water. The park is situated 185 km away from capital city Colombo. Although the park is situated in the dry zone of the country, it is consisting with a thick forest.  Wilpattu is also popular for its leopard density. The existence of willus and thick forest have made this a good habitat for wild life. 

Among Sri Lanka’s National Parks, Wilpattu National Park is unique with its Biodiversity. Over 25 species of mammals, unique Flora and Birds can be found in Wilpattu National Park.
